Espèce type: Libellula coerulescens F., 1798. Taille petite (33 mm) à grande (55 mm), corps généralement recouvert d’une pruinosité bleutée plus ou moins étendues; ce genre se distingue de tous les autres Libellulidae par la présence sur la partie antérieure du front d’un fort bouclier délimité par une carène frontale nette.
