11. Sparganothoides plemmelana Kruse and Powell, new species Figs. 17, 71 Diagnosis. This species is superficially most similar to S. ocrisana, but it lacks the modifications of the head and thorax characteristic of the latter. Although most closely related to S. teratana and S. carycrosana based on genitalic features, S. plemmelana is not similar superficially to either of them. Description. Male. Head: Frons yellowish white; vertex roughened, yellowish brown. Labial palpus short, about twice as long as wide, light brown mesally, yellowish brown to brown laterally. Antennal scaling yellowish brown with some brown scales. Thorax: Dorsum smooth scaled, yellowish brown. Forewing length 8.6–9.6 mm (= 9.0; n = 3). Forewing costal fold short, less than one-half wing length; forewing ground color light brownish yellow, with brownish gray median and subterminal fascia; brownish gray blotch at tornus; brownish gray blotch subbasally on dorsal margin; indistinct rows of dark brown transverse strigulae throughout terminal and subterminal areas; light orange overscaling throughout. Fringe yellowish white to brownish yellow, with some gray scaling. Hindwing gray, some specimens with faint gray transverse striae throughout. Abdomen: Genitalia (Fig. 17; slide #5554; EME; Guatemala, Baleu, Mpio. San Cristóbal, Verapaz, Alta Verapaz; n = 1) with uncus long, curved, apex dorso-ventrally flattened, broad, tip strongly bilobed, U-shaped, with long setae dorsally, broad patch of spinules ventrally; tegumen raised into an exaggerated oval at base of uncus, laterally lobed near base of socius/gnathos arms; socius triangular posteriorly, secondary arms long, slender, abruptly curved before enlarged apices, enlarged apices asymmetrically widened, splayed in fanlike manner; transtilla strongly sclerotized, straight, spines short, numerous over most of posterior margin, anterior lobed process reinforced with invagination at middle; valva subrectangular without sclerotized crease, costa straight in basal one half, somewhat angled toward apex, sacculus concave, pulvinus absent; phallus pistol shaped, aedeagus tapered, attenuate apically, shorter than phallobase, attached to juxta by strongly sclerotized process, phallobase elongate with small rounded bulb; cornuti in dense clump of> 30, with a minute spine near base. The specific epithet is from the Greek “plemmeles” (= discordant), referring to the discordance between superficial and genitalic similarities among this species and its most closely related congeners.
