Abstract

Podaena glabriventris Ordish, 1984 (Figs 24, 29, 30, 48, 52, 56, 66, 67, 73, 74, 83, 84, 98, 100) Podaena glabriventris Ordish, 1984: 14, figs 7, 19, 27, 81, 110. Differential diagnosis. Male (Fig. 100) body length (taken from anterior margin of labrum to elytral apex) 1.75 mm; female body length 1.80 mm. A small species, short and wide in habitus and with short legs. Externally similar to P. maclellani, with both species having unmodified male palps, only different in length (Figs 23–24), slightly modified male foretibiae (Figs 25–26, 29–30) and round elytra. However, P. glabriventris has a smaller body as well as shorter legs and elytra than P. maclellani. Also, P. kuscheli has similar male palps to those of P. glabriventris but their very distinct foretibiae (Figs 29–32) clearly separates these two species externally. That superficial similarity with P. maclellani contrasts with all the other features that unequivocally distinguish P. glabriventris from all species of Podaena: a unique, large and semicircular, glabrous central area in the metaventrite (Fig. 48); a unique last abdominal male tergite (Fig. 52); a small male ventrite 7 with the shortest spiculum (Fig. 56); a uniquely wide last abdominal female tergite with characteristic chaetotaxy (Fig. 66); and a gonocoxite with a convex distal margin (Fig. 67). The male genitalia (Figs 73−74) are also diagnostic, highly sclerotized, with a cylindrical and slightly curved main piece ending in a wider tapering apex. Distal lobe short and wide, cylindrical and well sclerotized. Parameres inserted near the phallobase, with distal setae distributed over a third of their length. The ejaculatory pump and the flagellum are apparently absent. The spermatheca of P. glabriventris is, without doubt, the most characteristic among all species of Podaena, with a corrugated proximal sac, a long, straight and lighter central piece, and a sclerotized, ringed distal duct (Figs 83−84). Distribution. As in Fig. 98. Until now, only known from three localities in the North Island, but we report new records from Taupo (TO) in the North Island, as well as Nelson (NN) and Marlborough (MB) in the South Island.
