Abstract

FIGURE 1. Oscillograms showing examples of calling songs from cicada species in the Pauropsalta annulata species group, to illustrate the acoustic terminology used in this paper. Most P. annulata cicadas produce a biphasic song. A 'buzzing' component alternates with a 'lilting' component and each of these is illustrated with examples from three species, all labelled with terms relevant to each. The buzzing component is on the left and the lilting component (not necessarily conspecific) on the right.
