Resumen narrativo sobre el proceso judicial vivenciado en primera persona ante la justicia ecuatoriana e internacional sobre el Síndrome de Laron.

Abstract

Laron syndrome has been investigated by Zvi Laron who, after describing this disease for the first time, has published several articles and a book about the syndrome, which has helped to improve its understanding. In Ecuador, Dr Jaime Guevara with a population of approximately 100 patients has contributed to understanding its peculiarities which are genetic, of an autosomal recessive type. It causes the most severe growth retardation of those caused by all other diseases, leading to physical disability in its carriers. The goal is to summarize and integrate the different publications about Laron syndrome to determine the causes and to understand the unjustified delay in the supply of medicine that patients require. This causes the proteins that make up the interacting receptors with the hormones to stimulate growth to be damaged, this means that: a person's growth is given by the growth hormone that at the level of several organs, especially the liver, stimulates the synthesis of IGF-1, which is a protein very similar to insulin, in Laron syndrome there is a growth hormone but the receptor is defective so the production of IGF-1 is not adequate and the treatment consists of placing synthetic analogs of the IGF-1 known as MECASERMINA. In Ecuador, obtaining the mecasermin for treatment, led to a lawsuit against the Ministry of Health, a lawsuit that was won in 2007 and the centennial was not fulfilled. They had to go to the legal department of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito whose members helped to press for compliance with the sentence and in 2019 treatment for patients who are still qualified finally began. As conclusion, we can say that the presence of genetic diseases will always be present, but with an appropriate treatment something can be done to improve the lives of people who suffer from it.
