United States: CO, IA, IL, MI, MN (Koch et al. 2014), MT, ND (Rider 2012), SD, UT (Knowlton & Harmston 1940). Comments: Most records of this species are under the specific epithet piceus Dallas, either in Peribalus or Holcostethus, and this is the name it was catalogued under by Froeschner (1988). Rider & Rolston (1995) showed that Dallas’ name was preoccupied and proposed Holcostethus macdonaldi as a replacement name.
