Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) Distribution: Canada: AB (Gariepy et al. 2014a), BC (Abram et al. 2019), ON (Fogain & Graff 2011; Gariepy et al. 2014a, b; Roch 2020), QC (Fogain & Graff 2011, Gariepy et al. 2014 a, Roch 2020). United States: AL (Balusu et al. 2019), CA (Hamilton 2009), CT (O’Donnell & Schaefer 2012), DE (Cissel et al. 2015), FL (Halbert 2016, 2018; Penca & Hodges 2018), IL (Scheihing et al. 2016), KY (Athey et al. 2017), MD (Inkley 2012, Bergmann & Raup 2014, Gariepy et al. 2014 a, Jones et al. 2014, Cissel et al. 2015), ME (Roch 2020), MI (Nielsen et al. 2011, Swanson 2012), MN (Koch 2014, Koch et al. 2014), MO (Sites et al. 2012), NC (Bakken et al. 2015), NH (Roch 2020), NJ (Hamilton & Shearer 2003), NM (Bundy 2012), NY (Roch 2020), OR (Hamilton 2009, Hedstrom et al. 2014), PA (Hoebeke 2002, Hoebeke & Carter 2003, Gariepy et al. 2014a), TN (Jones & Lambdin 2009), VA (Basnet et al. 2014, 2015; Bakken et al. 2015), VT (Roch 2020), WA (Zack et al. 2012), WI (Jaffe et al. 2021), WV (Lee et al. 2014). Comments: This species is similar in appearance to some species of the genera Brochymena and Euschistus. It can usually be recognized by the presence of pale markings on the antennae and connexiva, and it has the metathoracic scent glands more elongate and apically acute. Halyomorpha halys was not known to occur in North America at the time of the Froeschner (1988) catalog; it was first recorded from the United States by Hoebeke (2002). Hamilton (2009) also recorded single introductions that were eradicated in Maine and South Carolina, and Rider (2012) reported similar introductions in North Dakota and western Minnesota. Due to the economic importance of this species (it attacks many different crops including both fruits and vegetables, and is a nuisance because it enters people’s homes and buildings), there exists a large body of literature concerning this species, including many reports in the extension literature (brochures and internet reports). This has made tracking all of the individual published state records difficult.
