Abstract

Rhinolophus capensis Lichtenstein, 1823 Lichtenstein, H. (1823) Verzeichnis der Doubletten des zoologischen Museums der Königlichen Universität zu Berlin. Berlin, p. 4 [1–118]. Valid name: partly Rhinolophus capensis Lichtenstein, 1823; partly Rhinolophus clivosus Cretzschmar, 1828. Lectotype (here designated): ZMB 377, skin and skull (damaged), juvenile; “Cap” = Cape of Good Hope, Cape Peninsula, Western Cape Province, South Africa; collected by Krebs, 1822. Paralectotypes: ZMB 376, skin and skull, adult; Cape of Good Hope, leg. Bergius. ZMB 378, skin and skull, adult; Cape of Good Hope, leg. Mundt & Maire, 1818. Comment: R. capensis was described by Lichtenstein (1823) in the doublet register. Two additional specimens (donated by Krebs 1822/1823, and by Mund & Maire 1818/1819) had been considered as “surplus” and may have been sold to an unknown collection. No holotype was designated, thus the remaining three specimens of the original series are syntypes. Karl Koopman examined these specimens and concluded that ZMB 376 and ZMB 378 are Rhinolophus clivosus Cretzschmar 1828 and only the juvenile specimen ZMB 377 represents the species R. capensis. For nomenclatural stability we designate ZMB 377 as lectotype.
