Abstract The causal link between productivity and competitiveness is a subject of ongoing interest in the theories of international trade, stemming from the practical implications it has on the design of industrial policy and success in export markets. The aim of this work is to find causation between productivity and competitiveness in the Mexican steel industry. The results indicate that the series are integrated in order one, that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between them and that the causal relationship ranges from productivity to competitiveness in the Mexican steel industry in the period 1980-2017. The theoretical views that set out that productivity causes competitiveness, suggest that measures such as research and development, educational support and production subsidies, are more efficient mechanisms to boost productivity and presence in foreign markets.
