Abstract

Hegemonic paradigms in public communication of science and technology at the global level emerged in the post-war period in the central countries where the relationship between science, technology and society was seen as a key factor in geopolitical and economic domination. Thus, science and technology are associated with a social construction of meaning alien to the realities and needs of human development in peripheral countries, where these standards of utility and progress end up becoming a measure of the backwardness of their peoples. From an epistemological perspective, the conditions that make this phenomenon possible and some of its implications in the Latin American media are investigated. An attempt is then made to define technological alienation as a multidimensional construct, in order to identify how such dimensions are co-constructed from communication. The objective is to bring clarity to the task of collective construction of new social meanings for science and technology.
