In the last few years much progress has been made in digital preservation theory and technology. Yet for many small to medium sized archives and memory institutions there are still significant obstacles to implementing best practice solutions to meet the digital continuity requirements of their user communities. The Archivematica project attempts to make best-practice digital preservation more accessible to this community. It integrates a number of open-source tools to create a free digital archives system that is based on a practical analysis of the OAIS functional model.
