This working paper provides a practical definition of archival materials for the purpose of software engineering. Archival science scholars split hairs about the definition of archives and records. Most of these academic definitions are aspirational. However, they do not reflect the heterogeneous and eclectic nature of real-world archival holdings. Software engineering requires precise definitions of the entities within its domain. This paper attempts to provide a practical definition for the archival materials managed with archives management software.
