A comment on Karen Maex' s speech about the need of a Digital University Act to protect independent and public knowledge. Although it is necessary to protect the independence of research - i.e. of researchers, books and data - from the all-pervading power of surveillance capitalism, we should also ask why the public sphere became so weak that universities require a law to defend their public user of reason.
