Abstract

L’utilisation conjointe des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives (méthode mixte) dans la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales suscite, depuis plus de deux décennies, de nombreux débats. Le devis mixte se définit comme un devis qui combine, dans la même étude, des approches de recherche et, plus spécifiquement, un langage, des concepts et des stratégies quantitatives et qualitatives (Johnson et Onwuegbuzie, 2004). Or, selon Creswell (2009), les types de devis mixtes sont fonction de l’ordre d’acquisition des données qualitatives et quantitatives et de l’importance accordée à certaines données. Plusieurs classifications des designs de méthodes mixtes ont alors été élaborées (Greene, Caracelli et Graham, 1989 ; Patton, 1990 ; Creswell, 1999 ; Creswell et al., 2003). Dans le cadre de cette présentation, notre objectif est d’aller au-delà de la définition générale d’un devis mixte pour proposer à partir de quelques classifications existantes, une typologie des grandes catégories de devis mixtes de recherche, tels qu’on peut les retrouver actuellement dans la recherche francophone en Afrique. Nous évoquons enfin quelques contraintes à l’utilisation des devis mixtes dans la recherche francophone en Afrique.
