William Buckland (Figura 1) nasceu em 1784, na cidade de Axminster, no município de Devon, Inglaterra, onde desde a infância se interessava pelos fósseis e rochas quando passeava com o pai. Buckland formou-se em 1804 no Corpus Christi College, Oxford, e em pouco tempo foi nomeado sacerdote e membro da universidade; desde então continuou seus estudos no curso de Bachelor of Arts1 na Universidade de Oxford se interessando principalmente pelas aulas de mineralogia, química e anatomia em especial com os professores John Kidd2 (1775-1851) e Christopher Pegge3 (1765- 1822). A dedicação de Buckland lhe possibilitou após um tempo o seu reconhecimento na área da geologia, de tal forma que acabou conquistando as cadeiras de mineralogia e geologia na Universidade de Oxford entre 1813 e 1849, sucedendo seu ex-professor John Kidd. Seu fascínio pelo ensino e ciência, aliado ao seu humor e eloquência, atraia a atenção das pessoas convertendo Buckland em um protagonista popular (Gordon, 1894; Edmonds, 1956).
