Abstract: The music of the Arma people of the great bend of the Niger River is, like its people, a melting pot of North African, Arab, Berber, Morisco and Black African forms. These gave rise to a unique culture with characteristic repertoires, festivals and ceremonies. Relations between al-Andalus (Moorish Spain) and the middle Niger River valley were frequent throughout the Middle Ages and early Modern era. Interesting sonorous landscapes thus appear in the music and festivals of this area. Together with an analysis of several songs, this article provides transcriptions of their musical scores.
