Abstract

As an artistic genre, created in Andalusia since the middle of the nineteenth century, Flamenco responds together with certain traditional cultural manifestations to the necessities of identity construction in modern Andalusian society. This doble constellation between tradition and innovation, "purity" and "fusion", characterizes the social and cultural conditions of musical creation: it explains not only the repeatedly intentions made by flamencologists, intellectuals and politicians towards its transformation into a manifest and "deep-rooted" symbol of andalusian identity, referring themselves even to the "blood" and the "homeland", it also elucidates the constant ambiguity, produced by the vitality of a genre based on tradition, and the following polemics between the flamenco-fans and experts as the consequence of the vanguardian artistic dynamics on the one hand and its canonization as a supposedly unimpeachable cultural value on the other. The present article tries to trace the musical diversification in flamenco since the 1950s and explain it with the help of the concept of musical hybridization as a consequence of social and cultural change in postmodern society with its peculiar economical, tecnologial and communicational tendencies. In this sense, flamenco is one of the examples with respect to the role of ethnic-style-music in the process of globalization.
