Abstract

Science of Tradition-Law. This manuscript is now IO Islamic 605 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Otto Loth, A Catalogue of the Arabic Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, (volume 1), no. 211 here with further notations and hyperlinks]. 211. 605. Size 101/4 in. by 7 in.; foll. 385. Twenty-one lines in a page. The first half of BURHÂN AL-DÎN Abu’l-Ḥasan ‘Alî b. Abu Bakr b. ‘Abd al-jalîl MARGHÎNÂNÎ’s (d. A.H. 593) الهدایة, which is a commentary on his own بدایة المبتدی, on Ḥanafite Law. Seevi. 479; Flügel, Hdss, Wien, iii. 202 sq., and Class. 316. The work was printed at Calcutta, A.H. 1234, and translated into English by C[harles] Hamilton, London, 1791, and this translation edited for the second time by S[tandish] G[rove] Grady, London, 1870. Concludes with کتاب الوقف. Well written, by ‘Alî b. Ḥasan Azharî, in Shawwâl, A.H. 861 [=1457 CE]: فی یوم السبت المبارک تاسع عشرین (sic) شوال المبارک سنة احدی و ستین و ثمانی مائة A table of contents is on the fly-leaves. Foll. 1 and 2, which are of a much smaller size, belong to a Persian treatise. A splendid ornament, in gold and blue, is on the title-page (fol. 6r.), containing the following inscription: الاول من الهدایة للشیخ الامام العالم عبدالجلیل المغری نانی (sic) رحمه الله According to notes at the end and on fol. 3, the book had been taken from Muḥammadâbâd-Bîdar, and came into the Royal Library of Bîjâpûr, in A.H. 1029 [=1619-20 CE]. Seals of Maḥmûd Khwâjah Jahân, and ‘Abd al-majîd Khân (A.H. 1145). In a rich Oriental binding. [Tippu.]
