Telobella wayang

Telobella wayang

Abstract

Type material of Telobella wayang (Yosii, 1976) The text of the original description of Propeanura wayang Yosii, 1976, the type species of Telobella Cassagnau, 1983, is not consistent on several points with figures given by Yosii (1976): De of abd.IV is given as i+ 1 +S chaetae in the text, but i+S in the figure; DL of abd.IV is given as i+ 1 in the text, but i+ 2 in the figure; DL of abd.V is given as ii+ 3 in the text, but i+ 1 in the figure. In addition, according to the description, there is no Schaetae on any lateral tubercle of abdominal tergites, a condition which is quite rare in the Indonesian Lobellini we have examined so far. This last character, important at the generic level, is difficult to observe and generally inadequately described in the papers published before 1985. In order to resolve the inconsistencies and to reassess the position of the taxon Telobella, we reexamined the type material of Propeanura wayang, deposited in the Geneva Museum. This material consists of (1) two specimens (one male, one female), preserved in alcohol, in a vial labelled “dét. Yosii holotype ”; as a female was designated as “ typus ” in the original diagnosis, the female of this vial must be considered as the holotype, and the male as one paratype; (2) a series of 3 specimens in alcohol also designated as paratypes by Yoshii; and (3) a slide with 2 specimens labelled " Propeanura wayang n. sp. " by Yoshii. We have therefore 7 specimens, all in poor condition, of which 5 are explicitly designated as types, while the original description is based on only 4 specimens from Baturaden (Java). The female holotype is in very poor condition; the male paratype in the same vial is better preserved, and seems conspecific with the holotype from the few characters observable in both specimens. Unfortunately, these types do not fit the original description given by Yosii (1976). In particular, the dorsoexternal Schaeta is included in the tubercle (De +DL) of abd.V (given as isolated in the original description), and there is one additional Schaeta on the lateral tubercle of abd.IV (none mentioned in the original description). The abd. IVV chaetotaxy of the specimens on slide (3) is similar to that of the original description, with dorsoexternal Schaeta of abd.V isolated on a separate tubercle; but these specimens exhibit additional Schaetae on the lateral tubercles of abd IIll (none given in the original description), and 2 Schaetae on the dorsolateral tubercles of th.IIIII (1 in the original description). This last character would place them near Hyperlobella Cassagnau, 1988. Of the three paratypes of the series (2), two are in very poor condition, and one seems to belong to still another species apparently devoid of lateral Schaetae on abd. IIV. The original description of T. wayang therefore does not fit any of the specimens in the type series, which includes 2 or 3 different species. We base our redescription of Telobella wayang on the two specimens of the series (1), because it includes both the holotype and the best preserved specimen. In spite of the bad condition of this material, it was possible to observe the main morphological features in use in the modern taxonomy of Lobellini, but a detailed description would have to wait the collection of topotypic material. Redescription of Telobella wayang Type material Holotype female and one paratype male, Indonesia: Java, Baturaden, 14 / 08/ 1965, R. Yosii leg. (Museum d’Histoire Naturelle de Genève, Switzerland). Size difficult to evaluate, between 1.5 and 2.5 mm. Body flattened, wide, the sixth abdominal tergite clearly bilobed. Abd.VI not hidden by abd.V. No (or very slight) lateral migration of Di chaetae of abd. V towards the De group. Tubercles indicated by integument swelling and slightly larger secondary granulation. Reticulation and tertiary granules absent. Plurichaetosis weak and limited to lateral tubercles. Head. Eyes 3 + 3. Labrum truncated at apex, with 2 proximal and 2 distal chaetae. Labium with the usual neanurine set of ventral chaetae (A, C, D, E, F, G, f), lateral chaetae not seen. Maxilla styliform. Mandible tridentate with the apical tooth subdivided in three toothlets. Tubercles Di and De of head not conspicuous; Di 1 and De 1 developed as macrochaetae, Di 2 and De 2 as mesochaetae. Tergites. Dorsointernal tubercles of the tergites weakly or not developed. Dorsoexternal tubercles close to dorsolateral ones, which are well developed. Macrochaetae long, not ciliated. Schaetae thin, longer than closest macrochaetae. Dorsointernal chaetae from th. II to abd. V: 3,3 /2,2,2,2,3; dorsoexternal chaetae from th. II to abd. IV: 3 +S+ms, 3 +S / 2 +S, 2 +S, 2 +S,? 2 +S; dorsolateral chaetae from abd.II to abd. IV: 2,2,2; lateral chaetae from th.II to abd.V: 3,3 / 4,5,5,7 8 +S, 56. Supernumerary Schaetae absent from the lateral tubercles of abd.IIII and from the dorsolateral ones of th.IIIII, and present on the lateral tubercle of abd.IV.
