Zwei Schutzzeichen Gegen Die Asiatische Cholera

Abstract

Noch in den 1980er-Jahren war es in manchen Teilen des Kantons Luzern Brauch, als Schutz vor seuchenartigen Krankheiten ein Bild mit dem Herz Jesu bei sich zu tragen. Ähnliche religiöse Schutzzeichen waren schon im 19. Jahrhundert im Umlauf, als sich die «asiatische» Cholera von Indien aus über Russland bis nach Europa ausbreitete und dort vor allem in Grossstädten die Bevölkerung in Furcht versetzte. Die Forschungen Robert Kochs zeigten, dass die neuen Lebensumstände im Europa des 19. Jahrhunderts die Ausbreitung der Seuche begünstigten. Auch bestimmte hygienisch schlecht erschlossene Gegenden Luzerns galten als Gefahrenherde. Bis auf einzelne Fälle blieb die Stadt zwar von einer Cholera-Epidemie verschont; dennoch versuchte man, sich mit Medikamenten, aber eben auch mit religiösen Talismanen wie den zwei hier näher beschrieben Amuletten aus der Sammlung des Museums Klösterli im Schloss Wyher, vor der Krankheit zu schützen.
