Abstrakt W 2020 roku minęła 85. rocznica założenia Księgi Szkockiej: listy problemów, komentarzy i rozwiązań proponowanych przez matematyków należących do Szkoły Lwowskiej i gości z kraju i zza granicy. Abstract The year 2020 brought the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Scottish Book: a list of problems, comments and solutions proposed by mathematicians from the Lwów School as well as domestic and foreign visitors. Not every mathematician could enter an arbitrary problem; only the problems which were approved by others could be entered. Stefan Banach and his friend Stanisław Mazur were pillars of the Lwów School of Mathematics and they, along with Stanisław Ulam, entered the largest number of problems in the Book. The problems concerned many areas of mathematics, classical as well as modern. They helped in developing new theories and from the very beginning they attracted young students of mathematics. On one hand, Banach closely watched the authors’ credits; his genius and involvement allowed for it. On the other hand, he could appreciate junior mathematicians’ ingenuity and their approach to solving problems. The history of some problems, their solutions and generalizations, is evidence of the Scottish Book’s great and continuing influence on the development of modern mathematics. This concerns, among other results, the famous Schauder fixed point theorem and Banach’s problem on homeomorphism of the spaces of type B. Among new mathematical areas initiated by the Scottish Book are e.g. the theory of infinite and topological games and the theory of random graphs. We think that the problems from the Scottish Books will acquire further interpretations and will be an inspiration for a new outlook on mathematics.
