Abstract

Die Diskussion um die Vollverhüllung muslimischer Frauen ist hoch emotional. Ob Gesichtsverhüllungen wie Nikab und Burka, aber auch Vermummung ohne religiös-kulturellen Bezug verboten werden sollen, entscheidet die Schweizer Stimmbevölkerung im Frühjahr 2021. Das Buch geht den Widersprüchen der sogenannten Burka-Debatte nach. Die entstandene Studie bietet zunächst neben einer kulturhistorischen Herleitung die erste solide Schätzung zur Anzahl vollverhüllter Frauen in der Schweiz, persönliche Aussagen einer Schweizer Nikabträgerin über ihre Beweggründe und Erfahrungen sowie einen Vergleich mit der Forschung anderer westeuropäischer Länder und skizziert die politischen Vorstösse der letzten Jahre. Im zweiten Teil arbeitet das Team anhand typischer Beiträge in Presse und Fernsehen heraus, was hinter der Debatte steckt. Thematisiert werden auch die jüngsten Entwicklungen wie der Tod der bekanntesten Schweizer Nikabträgerin und die amtlich angeordnete «Verhüllung» in Zeiten der Corona-Pandemie.
