SM2RAIN-ASCAT is a new global scale rainfall product obtained from ASCAT satellite soil moisture data through the SM2RAIN algorithm (Brocca et al., 2014; 2019). The SM2RAIN-ASCAT monthly rainfall dataset (in mm) is obtained from the daily dataset (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2591214) through spatial interpolation at 0.25-degree and 0.5-degree resolution to facilitate its use for long-term hydrological and climatic studies (and applications). The rainfall dataset is provided in NetCDF format. Two NetCDF files are provided: 1) "SM2RAIN_ASCAT_monthly_025_2007_2020.nc" at 0.25-degree resolution 2) "SM2RAIN_ASCAT_monthly_05_2007_2020.nc" at 0.5-degree resolution Details on the dataset development and its assessment with ground and reanalysis observations are provided as: Brocca, L., Filippucci, P., Hahn, S., Ciabatta, L., Massari, C., Camici, S., Schüller, L., Bojkov, B., Wagner, W.
