Extracting stellar variabililty from 1 million NGTS light curves

Abstract

Understanding the evolution of angular momentum in stars is one of the fundamental questions facing observational astronomy. By measuring photometric variability we gain insights into the properties of stars such as angular momentum through rotation. Using observations of almost 1,000,000 stars by NGTS at 12 second cadence over at least 6 months, we extract robust variability signals for around 10,000 objects spread throughout the southern hemisphere. We present our dataset using stellar parameters from Gaia to assess variable populations of interest. Finally, we compare our variability data to previous studies using Kepler and MEarth.
