Herrera turbida Sanborn 2019, n. comb.

Authors: Sanborn, Allen F.;

Herrera turbida Sanborn 2019, n. comb.

Abstract

Herrera turbida (Jacobi, 1907) n. comb., new record Carineta turbida Jacobi 1907: 17. (Callanga, Peru) REMARKS. While identify specimens of this species, I observed that the head width is greater than the mesothorax width in this species. A head as wide as or wider than the mesonotum is characteristic of species of the genus Herrera while the head is not as wide as the mesonotum in species of Carineta (see comments on the genera above). The lateral pronotum is not strongly angled mediad in this species as in species of Carineta. Therefore, based on the head being wider than the mesonotum and the shape of the prothorax, the species is reassigned to Herrera to become Herrera turbida (Jacobi, 1907) n. comb. This species can be distinguished from the other Bolivian species of Herrera by the reduced mesothoracic markings and copious piceous pile radiating from the dorsal surface of all body regions in this species. DISTRIBUTION. The species has been reported previously only from Peru (Metcalf 1963c). MATERIAL EXAMINED FOR NEW RECORD. The FSCA has specimens from Dept. Santa Cruz, 1 km. S. Montera, Muyurina, 22–IX–1959. “ BOLIVIA, Cocha. / Villa Tunari, Hotel / El Puente, ~ 400m. / II–15–2007 ” 28 males (AFSC, from Lois O’Brien); “ BOLIVIA, Cocha. / Villa Tunari, Hotel / El Puente, ~ 400m. / II–14–15–2007 // C.W. & L.B. O’Brien / UV &Hg vapor light” one female (AFSC, from Lois O’Brien); “ BOLIVIA: Dept. of / Santa Cruz, 1 m. S. / Montero, Muyurina // R.M. Cumming / 22–IX–59 / blacklight trap ” one male (AFSC); BOLIVIA: Santa Cruz Dept. / PN & ANIMI Amboró, Guarda / Parque Matatacú, Q. Verde Uno / 17º 33.136’ S, 63º 52.092’ W / el. 374 m, 19–23.xi.2004, Malaise / Robertson, Garcia, & Vidaurre ” one male (AFSC).
