Authors: BROWER, ANDREW V. Z.;

Astraptes audax BROWER 2010, sp. nov.

Abstract

Astraptes audax sp. nov. Type locality. Costa Rica, Alajuela Prov. Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Sector San Cristobal, Melina Bufalo, 10.884 ° N, 85.386 ° W, 560 m. Diagnosis. The species may be differentiated from other members of the Astraptes fulgerator complex by the following combination of character states of the DNA barcode: 38 T; 52A; 64C; 85 T; 139C; 205C; 220C; 274 T; 307C; 361C; 379 T; 649 T. 361 T is a unique fixed state for A. audax with respect to other members of the A. fulgerator complex. Holotype. Voucher 01-SRNP-1413, deposited at the University of Pennsylvania. Note: This species corresponds to the OTU ‘CELT’ of Hebert et al. (2004). Etymology. The name audax means ‘bold.’ The species is so named in recognition of the Barcoding of Life Database that houses the diagnostic characters.

Published as part of BROWER, ANDREW V. Z., 2010, Alleviating the taxonomic impediment of DNA barcoding and setting a bad precedent: names for ten species of ' Astraptes fulgerator' (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Eudaminae) with DNA-based diagnoses, pp. 485-491 in Systematics and Biodiversity 8 (4) on page 486, DOI: 10.1080/14772000.2010.534512, http://zenodo.org/record/4396045
