Bio: Julia Stewart Lowndes, PhD founded Openscapes to champion kinder, better science in less time through open data science and teamwork. A marine ecologist, she has shifted from doing her own research to empowering others with skill sets and mindsets for open, collaborative, and reproducible research. Recent open data science contributions include pieces in Scientific American, Nature, Nature Ecology & Evolution, the opening keynote at the 2019 useR! Conference, and the R for Excel Users workshop at RStudio::conf(2020).
Open source software is about more than code: it’s about welcoming a broadening audience to a shared vision and planning for sustainability. We’ll cover considerations for open source programs including messaging & "marketing", onboarding, inclusion, community building, web presence & technology choices, and fundraising, using Openscapes strategies as a starting example.
