Abstract

The present study analyses mediation practices in the pursuit of gender diversity visibility in two different cultural institutions: the Memorial Minas Gerais Vale, in Belo Horizonte, and the Museu da Diversidade Sexual, in São Paulo. Since gender diversity is strongly present in the area where those places are located, the research tries to measure to which extent it effectively appears in their cultural centers, concerning visitors or the exhibitions themes they display. Therefore, the work focuses on two former exhibitions that were set at both museums, based on a common ground: the ordinary aspects of LGBTQIA+ community life, frequently associated with crimes, moral and physical abuse. Even though diversity is highly protected by Brazilian law, cultural mediators still have to deal with strong social misconceptions that prevent total gender diversity acceptance. To overcome this challenge, cultural centers must adopt concrete educational actions by following some successful examples from Minas Gerais Vale Memorial and from the Sexual Diversity Museum in Brazil.
