Frühwarnsystem Upwelling (FRAM)

Abstract

Frühwarnsystem Upwelling (FRAM) Early Warning System Upwelling is a project funded by the Landesamt für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und ländliche Räume, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany Vergabenummer 0608.451812. The focus is on Eckernförde Bight bordering Kiel Bight in the Baltic Sea. It is home to one of the oldest - still operated - time series sites world wide. Among the goals of FRAM is a comprehensive understanding of processes that cause low-oxygen conditions in Eckernförde Bight. The approach includes the intergration of a coupled ocean-circulation biogeochemical model. This data repository hosts visualization of two members of an ensemble hindcast simulation covering the period 2000 - 2018. The members shown here differ with respect to the parameterization of background mixing that mimics (unknown) processes which can not be explicitly resolved because of the limited spatial resolution that is owed to computational constraints. The naming convention is as follows: MixingTag_VariableTag_ViewTag_YearTag.m4v MixingTag: Either LowMix or MedMix indicating low and medium levels of prescribed level of background mixing, respectively VariableTag: water temperature Temp in units degrees C; salinity of water Salt in units PSU; dissolved oxygen O2 in units mmolO2/m3, the cyan and mangenta contour refer to 60 and 120mmolO2/m3, respectively; time elapsed since water parcels have been in contact with the atmosphere at the surface Age in units days; residence time of water in Eckernförde Bight ResidencyTime in units days. ViewTag: Bottom refers to values at the bottom and zonal refers to a zonal cut through Eckernförde Bay.
