Resumo: Este artigo discute o lugar do Brasil nos projetos de unidade da América Latina, formulados por alguns dos mais destacados representantes da intelectualidade hispano-americana entre o final do século XIX e o início do XX. Parto da hipótese de que a posição do país lusófono dentro destas propostas passou da alteridade para uma inclusão ambígua. Essa mudança se daria em função da transformação no modo como a unidade continental era imaginada: indo da percepção de uma herança histórica e cultural compartilhada ao diagnóstico de dilemas socioeconômicos comuns. Contudo, a ambiguidade da posição brasileira se manteria pela continuada remissão as origens do ideário unitarista nas independências hispano-americanas. Abstract: This article discusses the place of Brazil in the projects of Latin American unity, formulated by some of the most distinguished representatives of the Hispanic American intellectuality, from the end of the 19th century to the first third of the 20th. I depart from the hypothesis that Brazil’s role in these projects went from a relationship of otherness to one of an ambiguous inclusion. This change was due to a transformation in the way that Latin America was imagined: going from the perception of shared historical-cultural ties, to the diagnose of common socioeconomic problems. However, the ambiguity remained because of the continued return to the origins of the idea of continental unity, the processes of Hispanic American independences.
