The article presents changes in the spatial diversity of the social situation in the 21 largest urban agglomerations in Poland using a “hardship index” as its synthetic measure. The analysis of the changes in 2002-2016 illustrates the processes occurring between the core and the suburban zone of the urban agglomerations. Research conducted in 2002 indicated a better social situation in core cities in comparison to the suburban zones. The years 2002-2016 brought about a partial change (though not a reversal) of this situation. Results of this research show also a strong variations within the group of suburban municipalities.

Artykuł przedstawia zmiany w przestrzennym zróżnicowaniu sytuacji społecznej w 21 największych polskich aglomeracjach wykorzystując w tym celu „wskaźnik uciążliwości” (ang. hardship index). Analiza zmian w latach 2002-2016 obrazuje procesy zachodzące między rdzeniem a strefą podmiejską aglomeracji. Badania przeprowadzone w 2002 roku wskazywały na lepszą sytuację społeczną w miastach rdzeniowych w porównaniu ze strefą podmiejską. Lata 2002-2016 przyniosły częściową zmianę (choć nie odwrócenie) tej sytuacji. Wyniki badań pokazują też bardzo silne wewnętrzne zróżnicowane obszarów podmiejskich.
