Od Antychrysta do Pontifexa. Newmanowskie zmagania z ideą papiestwa i ich współczesne analogie

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of the article is to present the contemporary challenges of theology and the struggles of members of the Catholic Church in the field of ecclesiology, especially in the context of perceiving the papacy and its role. John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was an Anglican clergyman who, influenced by personal research, converted to Catholicism. He was proclamated a saint in 2019 by Pope Francis at the Vatican. For many years Newman has struggled with the difficulties of the papacy. In the Anglican period, he has supported describing the Pope more as Antichrist than Pontifex. The article deals with the issue of phenomenon of conversion Newman's ideas, which are contemporarily questioned, denied or distorted: the apostolic succession; the episcopalism and collegiality of bishops; the synodality of the local Church and its limits; sensus fidei of the Christian people and the designation of their own Via Media, as well as negative trends in relation to current Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. In article are presented analogies between theological researches of John Henry Newman and the theological and moral confusion of many contemporary Catholics. W artykule wskazano analogie pomiędzy poszukiwaniami J. H. Newmana a sytuacją teologiczno-moralnego zagubienia wielu współczesnych katolików.
