Selezione vegetale – dall'incrocio classico all'editing genomico

Abstract

Parassiti, cambiamenti climatici e risorse limitate rendono necessaria la selezione di nuove varietà di piante per produrre alimenti di elevata qualità nel massimo rispetto dell’ambiente. A prescindere dalla specie coltivata, alla base della selezione vegetale c’è la diversità genetica, che può essere di origine naturale, o creata dall’uomo tramite diversi metodi. Le piante selezionate vengono descritte in modo dettagliato, esaminate per diversi anni e iscritte nel catalogo delle varietà dopo aver ottenuto un’autorizzazione ufficiale. Negli ultimi decenni la gamma dei metodi utilizzati nella selezione vegetale ha conosciuto un costante ampliamento: tramite la selezione per mutazione è possibile ampliare la diversità genetica, mentre l’ingegneria genetica consente l’introduzione di geni provenienti da specie diverse. Da poco inoltre, grazie all’editing genomico, è possibile ottenere modificazioni mirate in un determinato punto del genoma delle piante coltivate.
