Les déterminants de la performance financière des banques commerciales au Cameroun : une étude en panel

Abstract

Cet article étudie les déterminants de la performance financière des banques commerciales au Cameroun. L’étude couvre huit (8) banques des quinze en activité au Cameroun assujetties au contrôle de la Commission Bancaire de l’Afrique Centrale (COBAC) de 2008 à 2018 s’attache à montrer que, le système bancaire camerounais est inefficient selon l’optique de l’intermédiation financière. Les scores d’efficience des banques de l’échantillon sont mesurés en utilisant la méthode non paramétrique d’analyse par enveloppement des données, en anglais « Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) ». Cette estimation révèle un score d’efficience moyen global sur l’ensemble de la période de 87%. L’efficience selon l’optique intermédiation est déterminée positivement par le taux de croissance de l’économie, le ratio de liquidité, le ratio des crédits sur le total actif, la durée d’installation au pays et la part de marché. Dans cette optique, les banques publiques paraissent moins efficientes que les banques privées. Les variables taille (logarithme de l’actif), le ratio de fonds propres sur le total de crédits et l’inflation influencent négativement l’efficience selon l’optique de l’intermédiation financière. Toutes ces relations ont été obtenues à l’aide de l’estimation d’un modèle Tobit à effets aléatoires.
