WORKING PAPER 1 - Ser mas não ser, eis a questão. O problema persistente do essencialismo estratégico.

Abstract

Resumo A expressão “essencialismo estratégico” (originalmente proposta por Spivak) refere um tipo de solidariedade temporária para efeitos de acção social. O qualificativo “estratégico” estabelece uma ressalva em relação ao denegrido “essencialismo” e, simultaneamente, suspende as propostas alternativas de muita teoria social pós-estruturalista (nomeadamente na esteira de Foucault e, mais recentemente, de Butler) que apontam no sentido do estilhaçamento das categorias identitárias. Muitos movimentos sociais de cariz identitário não vivem separados da reflexão teórica e confrontam-se com o dilema de, por um lado, recusarem os próprios termos da categorização de que são alvo e, por outro, necessitarem de identificação com as categorias de modo a poderem movimentar-se no espaço público. No campo analítico, os cientistas sociais confrontam-se também com o dilema de estas duas opções serem mutuamente exclusivas. Propõe-se, nesta comunicação, que uma análise de base etnográfica e processual sobre as relações entre conflito, identificação e solidariedade, poderá ser o único caminho para ultrapassar o que, afinal, poderão ser falsos dilemas -propugnados por quem, na ciência social, não envereda pela etnografia ou por quem, nos movimentos sociais, não reflecte sobre as condições políticas da sua prática.
