BBMRI-ERIC established itself in years as one of the key global players in the field of biobanking. While the main focus of BBMRI remains Europe, the organisation understands the need to expand its outreach outside the EU, and to set up a coherent global strategy to develop the field of biobanking globally, and to increase BBMRI’s outreach. The ADOPT BBMRI-ERIC project allowed to expand BBMRI’s supporting biobanking activities in different regions in the world, and to develop a multi-year strategy that represents the backbone of future BBMRI global actions. Within the project, BBMRI identified four key regions of primary interest: China, Africa, Middle East and the Americas (USA, Latin America). The implementation of the strategy in the regions was paired with existing BBMRI National Nodes activities and connections, therefore maximising the impact of the ADOPT-BBMRI funding. In particular, several of the workshops organised within the project were co-funded by activities of National Nodes within such regions. ADOPT BBMRI-ERIC helped to bring the global biobanking community together, and highlighted the need for more international cooperation, based on the centres of excellence and networks identified by BBMRI.
