Abstract

Tandan kosong sawit (TKS) merupakan biomassa lignoselulosa yang sangat potensial di Indonesia. Produksi TKS per tahun diproyeksi akan mencapai lebih dari 40 juta ton dan belum termanfaatkan dengan baik di daerah-daerah penghasil komoditas kelapa sawit. Potensi TKS yang kaya akan kandungan hemiselulosa dapat dipadukan dengan kebutuhan pasar akan senyawa bernilai tinggi seperti xilitol dengan menggunakan konsep industri berbasis biomassa yang menarik untuk dikembangkan di Indonesia. Xilitol secara konvensional diproduksi menggunakan reaksi katalitik pada tekanan dan suhu tinggi, namun proses ini masih dianggap bermasalah karena mahalnya biaya produksi dan dampak negatif terhadap lingkungan. Bioproses xilitol telah banyak diteliti sebagai alternatif solusi dari kelemahan proses produksi xilitol secara konvensional. Namun sebagai teknologi baru, bioproses juga masih memiliki tantangan yang harus diselesaikan, terutama dari segi teknologi bioproses yang masih berkembang terus-menerus. Sudah cukup banyak penelitian mengenai proses fermentasi xilitol secara global, namun belum banyak penelitian tinjauan yang berusaha untuk mengkaji capaian state of the art dari pengembangan teknologi bioproses xilitol, terutama yang dapat diaplikasikan pada potensi TKS Indonesia. Penelitian tinjauan ini bertujuan untuk memperkaya pemahaman pada bidang bioproses Indonesia, secara khusus terhadap potensi terwujudnya konsep bio-industri nasional. Aplikasi konsep biorefinery pada industri sawit dapat menghasilkan desain proses produksi yang berkelanjutan pada industri tersebut. Harapan masa depan dari penelitian ini dirangkum pada suatu usulan skema biorefinery industri kelapa sawit.
