El siguiente trabajo es un intento de demostrar, por medio del estudio del mito de Caronte, que en ciertos momentos privilegiados del mundo antiguo surge un tipo de documentación que permite entrever modos de pensamiento de tipo popular. El análisis de las representaciones de Caronte en lécitos áticas de fondo blanco clarifica la comprensión de un mito tratado de modo muy inconexo en las fuentes literarias cu}'a aparición coincide con el aumento de la importancia económica, militar y política de las clases inferiores de la ciudadanía ateniense y cuyas características internas permiten englobarlo dentro de las manifestaciones de la religión popular.
