Cryptophagus scanicus (Linnaeus, 1758) NEWFOUNDLAND: Goulds, September 27, 1982 (1, AAFC); St. John’s, June 9, 1949, W.J. Brown (5, AAFC); Stephenville, 9 mi. west, August 17, 1981, D. Langor, bog pools (1, AAFC); Upper Ferry, August 18, 1981, D. Langor (6, MUN). Cryptophagus scanicus was reported in North America by Woodroffe and Coombs (1961) from the five specimens collected in St. John’s in 1949 by W.J. Brown. Additional records are given indicating that the species is established and occurs more widely in southern Newfoundland (Fig. 3). It is an adventive Palaearctic species found throughout Europe, in parts of North Africa, across Siberia to the Russian Far East, and in Turkey and Iran in the Middle East. It is also found in sub-Saharan Africa (Johnson et al. 2007). In Europe, it is found in various habitats including stored produce (Woodroffe and Coombs 1961).
