Synthèse sur les publics des cinémas Utopia à Avignon en 2014

Abstract

Avignon, dont le nombre de salles de cinéma par habitant fut longtemps le plus élevé de France, est l’un des territoires les plus cinéphiles de France. Si ce ratio a diminué, à la suite de la fermeture de deux cinémas historiques du centre ville, Le Pathé Palace et le Cinéma Capitole, l’offre cinématographique à Avignon reste riche et plurielle. En effet, depuis le début des années 2000, deux multiplexes se sont installés extra muros, s’ajoutant ainsi aux cinémas du centre-ville le Vox, le Capitole et les Cinémas d’Art et Essai Utopia. Le Laboratoire Culture et Communication de l’Université d’Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse porte, depuis une dizaine d’années, une attention particulière aux pratiques cinématographiques des habitants. La diversité des écrans présents sur le territoire avignonnais leur permet de disposer d’une programmation cinématographique complète qui engage à une propension plus grande à se rendre au cinéma. Depuis dix ans, les cinémas ont connus une hausse de leur fréquentation qui laisse entendre une pratique non exclusive des spectateurs. En 2010, les cinémas Utopia d’Avignon ont souhaité réaliser une enquête auprès de leurs publics afin de mieux comprendre les enjeux de l’accessibilité du cinéma en termes de transports. L’accueil des multiplexes en périphérie interroge les pratiques des habitants quant à leurs déplacements mais rend principalement compte d’une consommation culturelle élargie. Il est ainsi question d’un ensemble d’activités structurées par la sortie au cinéma. Cette première enquête a été engagée avec l’équipe du Laboratoire Culture et Communication sous la direction scientifique d’Emmanuel Ethis.
