El cuarto sector en España

Abstract

El cuarto sector es un nuevo espacio económico y empresarial conformado por organizaciones que combinan una misión social y/o medioambiental con auto-sostenibilidad financiera, a partir de la generación de ingresos procedentes del mercado. Estas organizaciones comparten características de los sectores tradicionales (privado, público y no gubernamental) y confluyen en un modelo híbrido que aúna misión social y rentabilidad económica (Sabeti, 2009). El impacto potencial de estas organizaciones de afrontar los desafíos globales es muy elevado, al incorporar modelos de negocio sostenibles y dar entrada al capital necesario para crecer y escalar su impacto. En España el sector social ha sido abordado desde distintos conceptos, sobre cuya delimitación conceptual persiste un debate académico, como economía social, economía solidaria, emprendimiento social, innovación social o inversión de impacto (Monzón, J.L. y Herrero, M., 2017; Solorzano et al., 2018). Sin embargo, el concepto del cuarto sector ha tenido una penetración muy limitada, existe un notable desconocimiento sobre el mismo y apenas se han realizado investigaciones al respecto (Zurbano et al., 2014). En este contexto, el presente trabajo pretende analizar el estado del cuarto sector en España con el objetivo de contribuir a introducir este concepto en nuestro país, y a superar su ausencia en el debate público, privado y académico.
