Harmonía is one of the many Spanish music magazines published in Spain during the 20th century. Published in Madrid between 1916 and 1959, its main task was the publication of music for bands –original as well as transcribed– making it a valuable source to inform the evaluation of the function met by this repertoire in the early 20th century. In light of this fact, the present article aims to: (1) analyze the music band repertoire published in Harmonía in 1920, with particular attention to the transcriptions of lyrical repertoire; and (2) study the views purveyed by several composers and music critics of the activities of music bands in Spain.
