Las ideas lingüísticas y el trabajo lexicográfico de Adriano García-Lomas

Abstract

To date, no work has been done on the philological studies of Adriano García-Lomas, a key figure in the description of the Cantabrian languages in the 20th century. The purpose of this article is to remedy this situation, as well as to analyze and assess this author’s contributions and their validity for current research. Following a brief biographical sketch, which presents a number of gaps that are difficult to explain, two main areas are explored: the analysis of his linguistic ideas, which are virtually unknown, and the description of his lexicographic work, which is known —at least, superficially— by most specialists. On the one hand, the conclusions endorse his work as a lexicographer, which improved —in quality and quantity— over the years; on the other hand, they highlight the lack of originality and the many corrections of his linguistic ideas concerning the variant described.
