Abstract

The following essay questions the problem of sovereignty from the encounter between for a Critique of violence and The origin of the German baroque drama of the thinker Walter Benjamin. In this meeting we propose to think about the notion of sovereignty based on the problem raised by the notion of divine violence and its denomination as a sovereign violence. The questions that guide us next will try to open a space where it is possible to understand how it is feasible to read the problem of sovereignty from Benjamin's analyzes on the German Baroque and the dissenting conception that this cultural movement presents regarding the Christian theological tradition from which the classic notion of Schmittian sovereignty follows. The German Baroque for Benjamin understands sovereignty from the problem of catastrophe as a manifestation of a true exceptionality that goes beyond the rule of law.
