Managing hedges for firewood production - Pensasaidoista polttopuuta

Abstract

Kuten he sanovat: "Mikä voisi olla parempaa? Peltojen sadonmenetys on mitätön. - AFINET Project Factsheet Translation - Hedges managed in coppice: a case study of a conversion of a destroyed hedge into a profitable firewood crop. The farm has 162 hectares of livestock, with a low header. It includes about 19 km of hedges, managed in coppice with a rotation of 15 to 20 years, except for hedges along roads that are intensively pruned annually. The farm has a small firewood production business selling about 175 tonnes of logs a year from hedges. Hedge coppicing produces logs, the smallest materials (used on the farm or sold at a reduced price) and the leftovers are treated on a branch logger and sold as chips. All types of firewood are stored and covered for 10 months to reduce their moisture content. In 2017, the farmer cut the hedge into a coppice, which consisted of a 220 m long, 6.5 m high, 15-year-old species mix, and was set in an old shed. The cut was made with chainsaw, the material was processed in slacher and branch logger. The 220 m of cut hedge produced 21.41 tons of wood material that could be sold or used.
