Abstract

This paper explores the topic of the reconstruction of Hagia Sophia’s medrese, which started in 2018 after years of debate and efforts by ICOMOS, architects and historians in Istanbul to stop it. Some of the main questions that arise from this project are, is it possible to revive the past through reconstruction in the first place, and should we try to? What is the wider discourse that has made replica buildings multiply in the city of Istanbul, and what are the dangers? Why is this project so politically charged? What are the implications for the discipline of history?
