Walnut trees in agroforestry systems - Saksanpähkinäpuut (Juglans regia) agrometsätaloudessa

Abstract

- Walnut trees (Juglans regia) are grown in many parts of Europe. They are known to be trees with high commercial potential. Their nutritious nuts and good quality wood are very popular, so the demand is important. Mediterranean countries in Southern Europe and the EU are the European market leaders, while the United States and China are the world's leading producers. The commercial cultivation of walnuts is still rare in Flanders and almost all nuts are imported. This creates good opportunities for locally produced nuts. Since the Flemish government began subsidizing agroforestry in 2011, there is growing interest in establishing walnut trees in agroforestry systems. These robust trees are a perfect fit for agroforestry, particularly because of the relatively low light competition with other crops because of their open crown, late leaf emergence and early fall. The walnut leaves are also rich and decompose quickly, accelerating the nutrient cycle.
