Abstract

Man’s behaviour and attitudes reveals what kind of person he is. Therefore, behaviours and attitudes help us to get to know people. God mentions in theQur’an People of Yamin (Right) and ashab al-maimana (People of maymana). Theseterms are used in the Qur’an to refer to certain people. The qualities of thegood people meant by these terms are mentioned immediately after them. Thisindicates how God attributes importance to the right. The Prophet are considered by muslims as exemplary figure with hisattitudes and they are keen to follow his orders and advices word for word. Theprophet did virtuos actions with his right and the other actions with his left.He also encouraged his followers to do the same thing. The Companions behavedin the same manner and did their best to pass this on to the followinggeneration. These practices and advices were considered by the scholars ofIslamic Law as a rule to follow. TheProphets’ orders, pratcices and advices about the right side were transmittedto us through prophetic sayings. Thus, muslims put emphasis on the right bothin their daily practices and prayers In this study, the problem of whether the Prophet’s emphasis on the righside is due to his personal choice or God’s decree will be discussed. Themeaning of the two related terms yamin (right) and yasar (left) will beexamined. The rule about prioritising the washing right hand and leg whiletaking ablution, the position of a single person when there is single person behindthe imam and the rule regarding theposition of right hand and right leg while sittinng at the end of the prayer(tashahhud)
