Abstract

Cuba fue uno de los países que más tempra - namente iniciaron su transición demográfica, pro - ducto del significativo descenso de la fecundidad, el aumento de la expectativa de vida y el persisten - te saldo migratorio negativo. Este proceso condujo a un vertiginoso y homogéneo envejecimiento de la estructura por edad de su población. El objetivo de esta contribución consiste en mostrar al enveje - cimiento como un logro inobjetable, pero que en - traña desafíos en términos de los derechos de las personas mayores, las dinámicas familiares y el cui - dado. El trabajo se apoya en la revisión documen - tal, la confrontación de distintas investigaciones, el enfoque histórico-lógico y el manejo de informa - ción censal y datos provenientes de encuestas. Las políticas sociales han propiciado que la mayoría de los adultos mayores cubanos tengan salud y cali - dad de vida, gocen de respeto y reconocimiento en el seno familiar, como resultado de los valores instaurados por la educación y la solidaridad; pero nuestras leyes tienen que extender disposiciones que regulen explícitamente el actuar con respecto a los ancianos, y de las posibilidades reales que tie - nen las personas mayores de ejercer sus derechos. La familia cubana hoy es menos numerosa. Su di - namismo y los arreglos al interior del hogar cuba - no no pocas veces afectan la convivencia domés - tica, generan conflictos, presionan los recursos y los servicios de la vivienda. Surgen tensiones inter - generacionales y, en particular, sobre las personas de edad. La eminente fragilidad y dependencia de los adultos mayores conduce a una creciente de - manda de cuidados, atención y protección social
