Cephalic setae mostly missing and sockets obscured. Presutural intra-alar seta absent. Two dorsocentral setae. Acrostichal seta absent. One lateral scutellar seta. Head yellow (white below antenna), with frons brownish posteriorly, ocellar spot relatively large, first flagellomere light yellow ventrally and with dark dorsal stripe and back of head with one pair of brown stripes radiating from foramen; gena and parafacial pilose. Scutum mostly brown postsuturally with one pair of darker, thicker posterolateral stripes; yellow anteriorly with light medial stripe, brown anterior margin, and laterally brownish notopleuron. Scutellum and laterotergites brown with small yellow spot in anterolateral corner of scutellum. Pleuron light yellow with brown subnotal stripe not reaching ventral margin of anepisternum. Legs yellow with coxae and base of femora light yellow. Wing lightly clouded on distal 1/3, but only conspicuous apically on R2+3. M1+2 ratio 4.3. Abdomen brown with surstylus yellow and cerci white. Female. Unknown. Male terminalia. Not dissected. Epandrium very large and bulbous (thick and slightly more than half length of tibia). Surstylus nearly as long as epandrium with apex broadly rounded, and anterodistal corner somewhat pointed and directed inwards. Cerci slightly projecting and rounded. Etymology. The specific name is Latin for “large”, denoting the size of the male terminalia. Holotype: NIGERIA. Ngel Nyaki, N-E State, 31.iii.1970, J.T. Medler (1♂, USNM). Comments. While externally similar to other Sobarocephala with a dark notum (such as S. cycla, S. secaperas, S. kapnikos and even some S. plumicornis), the extremely large male terminalia are characteristic.
